SEOUL, KOREA - According to Korea International Trade Association on March 26th, local car components makers posted USD 24.6 billion in exports and ran a trade surplus of about USD 19.7billion last year, reaching record highs for the last three consecutive years.
Since the 1990s, the export of local automobile parts has skyrocketed by 50 times thanks to local car makers’ construction of production lines abroad and the increased demand of overseas companies.
Gradually improved quality and price competitiveness of car parts for the last 20 years have sharply increased the export and trade surplus. Experts are particularly saying that Hyundai-Kia’s ‘Global Production Portfolio’ that embraces both advanced and emerging countries has also increased the demand for Korean automobile components in the global market.
The government’s support has also made a great contribution to the increased export. The government has spared no efforts to develop the local car parts industry by coming up with relevant policies including a basic plan for developing parts and materials in 2001 and a plan for facilitating the car industry in 2009.
작년 자동차 부품 수출 246억달러…20년새 50배 늘어
국산 자동차 부품 수출액이 지난 20년간 50배 가까이 증가하며 수출 주도산업으로 확실히 자리매김했다.
26일 한국무역협회에 따르면 지난해 국산 자동차 부품 수출액은 246억달러, 무역흑자는 197억달러를 기록해 3년 연속 사상 최고액을 경신했다.
자동차 부품 수출액은 무역협회가 품목별 수출입 통계를 집계하기 시작한 1977년 1100만달러에서 35년새 2240배나 늘어났다. 또 무역수지는 1억1400만달러 적자에서 대규모 흑자로 환골탈태했다.
자동차 부품 수출은 1990년대 이후 국내 완성차 업체의 해외 생산기지 건설, 해외 업체들의 수요 확대 등에 힘입어 급격히 늘었다. 실제 1992년 5억달러를 소폭 웃돌았던 자동차 부품 수출은 지난해 246억1000만달러로 20년간 50배 가까이 급증했다.
같은 기간 주력 수출 품목인 △반도체(7배) △자동차(17배) △선박해양구조물 및 부품(10배) △무선통신기기(30배) △철강판(6배) △합성수지(12배) 등의 수출액 증가 폭과 비교하면 자동차 부품 수출 증가세는 더욱 두드러진다. 무역수지도 5억달러 적자(1992년)에서 지난해 197억달러 흑자를 기록하는 등 눈부신 성장세를 기록했다.
지난 20년간 자동차 부품 수출과 무역수지 흑자가 급증한 것은 품질과 가격경쟁력이 점진적으로 향상되면서 해외 주요 업체의 수요가 늘어난 것이 주요인이다. 또 국내 완성차 업체의 해외 인지도 제고와 글로벌 생산거점 확보가 본격적으로 이뤄진 것도 국산 자동차 부품 수출이 크게 늘어나는 데 주효했다. 특히 현대·기아차가 지난해 선진국과 신흥국을 망라한 `글로벌 생산 포트폴리오`를 완성하면서 한국산 부품이 글로벌 시장에서 주목받는 계기를 마련했다는 평가다.
국가 차원의 지원도 크게 기여했다. 정부는 2001년 부품·소재발전 기본계획, 2009년 자동차산업 활성화 방안 등의 정책을 통해 자동차 부품 산업 발전에 힘을 쏟았다. 또 주요 국가와 체결한 자유무역협정(FTA)도 한국산 부품의 글로벌 경쟁력을 끌어올리는 원동력으로 작용했다.
업계 관계자는 “세계 주요 완성차 업체들의 한국산 자동차 부품에 대한 수요는 갈수록 늘어날 것”이라고 밝혔다.
