SEOUL, KOREA – As Samsung Electronics has applied “multi-level evaporation technology” to the Galaxy S4, there has been a stir in the smartphone case industry.
Multi-level evaporation technology, which adds post-processing treatments, such as electron beams, sputtering and evaporation, to molds, is required for realizing unique smartphone case designs. Since high precision technology and large-scale facility investment are needed to tap multi-level evaporation technology, smartphone housing suppliers are expected to be divided into winners and losers.
According to industry insiders, Samsung Electronics will apply multi-level evaporation technology to the front, back and the battery cover of the Galaxy S4. Since Samsung aims to sell 100 million Galaxy S4 smartphones, it seems to have felt the need for design innovations that can catch the eye of global consumers. Though multi-level evaporation technology boasts its strength in realizing diverse designs, companies have found it difficult to commercialize multi-level evaporation technology because of low yield rates and upfront hefty facility investment.
As Samsung, which also had failed to apply multi-level evaporation technology to its Galaxy S3 pebble blue, makes a second attempt to commercialize multi-level evaporation technology cases, case manufacturers with technological prowess and deep pockets are filled with expectations of a high ROI while others, who cannot afford to install facilities for multi-level evaporation technology, are wearing a frown.

삼성전자가 갤럭시S4에 `멀티증착` 기술을 적용하면서 케이스 업체들이 들썩이고 있다.
멀티증착은 사출물에 전자빔•스퍼터링•증발건조 등 후가공 처리를 가미해 독특한 스마트폰 케이스 디자인을 구현하는 기술이다. 일반 케이스 가공보다 정밀 기술이 요구될 뿐 아니라 대규모 설비투자도 요구돼 케이스 업계에서는 옥석가리기의 신호탄이 될 것으로 보인다.
1일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자는 갤럭시S4의 전면•후면외에 배터리 커버에도 멀티증착 케이스를 채용한다. 1억대 판매를 목표로 하는 플래그십 모델인 만큼 시장의 주목을 끌 수 있는 디자인 혁신이 필요하다고 판단한 것으로 보인다. 멀티증착 기술은 디자인의 장점에도 불구하고 생산 수율이 낮고 비용 부담이 커 상용화하기 어려웠다. 그동안 많은 전자 회사들이 멀티증착 상용화에 실패한 이유다. 삼성전자도 갤럭시S3 페블 블루 모델에 멀티증착 케이스를 시도했지만, 수율 악화로 수십만대의 불량품을 폐기한 바 있다.
삼성전자가 멀티증착 케이스 상용화에 재도전하면서 케이스 업체들의 희비가 엇갈리고 있다. 기술력과 자금력을 확보한 업체들은 고수익에 대한 기대감으로 들뜬 상태다. 선두 업체들을 중심으로 후공정 설비 투자 움직임이 활발하다. 인탑스•우전앤한단 등은 멀티증착 공정 상당 부분을 이미 내재화한 것으로 알려졌다. 안정적인 수율만 확보한다면 멀티증착 케이스 생산으로 고수익을 올릴 것으로 보인다.
자금 여력이 적고 멀티증착 후공정을 외부에 의존하는 케이스 업체들은 고민이 깊어지고 있다. 투자 부담이 큰데다 물량 대응이 가능한 협력사를 찾기도 쉽지 않다. 좋은 협력 업체를 확보해도 문제는 많다. 외주 업체로 케이스를 옮기는 과정에 파손 비용이 발생해 수율이 떨어지고 물류 비용 부담도 커진다. 종전에는 전체 생산품 중 일부만 멀티증착 공정을 사용해 비용 부담이 크지 않았다.
그러나 갤럭시S4 같은 플래그십 모델용 멀티증착 케이스를 제조하려면 비용 부담은 눈덩이처럼 불어난다. 삼성전자는 갤럭시S4를 시작으로 갤럭시노트 시리즈에도 멀티증착 케이스를 적용할 것으로 알려졌다.
업계 관계자는 “기술력과 생산 능력을 갖춘 일부 업체로 케이스 주문 물량이 쏠릴 것”이라며 “경쟁에서 뒤처진 업체들은 저가 피처폰 시장으로 물러날 수밖에 없을 것”이라고 말했다.
