SEOUL, KOREA - The subscriber numbers for the Internet Protocol television, or IPTV, services have surpassed 7 million in 4 years and 4 months after launch.
According to the Korea Digital Media Industry Association on May 5, the number of IPTV subscribers was 6.95 million as of April 28. Given 40,000 to 50,000 new subscribers are added every week, it is estimated the figure has broken the 7-million level by the 3rd.
Korea's IPTV services were launched in January 2009. The factors for the rapid gain have to do with the aggressive marketing efforts by the three IPTV service providers, including KT, SK Broadband, and LG U+.
As of April 28, KT leads the market with 4.15-million subscribers, followed by SK Broadband (1.58 million) and LG U+ (1.22 million). The subscriber numbers for IPTV services in Korea is fourth highest in the world after China, the United States, and France.
