SEOUL, KOREA – Apple’s endeavor to climb over the Great Wall of China has hit another snag. Apple, which failed to supply its smartphones to China Mobile, the biggest telecom operator in China, has also stopped short of enjoying a first-mover advantage in the competition for China’s 4G market.
Its archrival Samsung Electronics set foot in China’s 1.1 billion-strong 4G market by releasing the Galaxy S4 that supports TD-LTE. At the end of last month, the Samsung Galaxy S4 went on sale via China’s top three telecom operators –China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. Except for smartphones manufactured by Chinese companies including Taiwan’s HTC, the Galaxy S4 is the only major smartphone that supports TD-LTE.
Apple’s launch of its 4G smartphones in the Chinese market is likely to come five months later than Samsung Electronics’. The iPhone 5S, scheduled for release within this year, is anticipated to support TD-LTE, featuring Qualcomm’s RF360 chip, which can supposedly support up to 40 LTE bands. Qualcomm’s RF360 chip will be commercialized in the second half of this year, so Apple’s 4G smartphone cannot be launched before the release of Qualcomm’s RF360 chip.
According to market researcher Strategy Analytics (SA), Apple ranked third with an 11% share of the Chinese market.

갤럭시S4 만리장성 넘었지만…아이폰5S 못 넘어!
만리장성을 넘으려는 애플의 도전이 또 다른 암초를 만났다. 기술방식과 가격문제로 중국 최대 통신사 차이나모바일에 아이폰을 공급하지 못한 애플은 4G 시장 선점에도 밀렸다.
최대 경쟁자 삼성전자는 TD-LTE를 지원하는 `갤럭시S4`로 11억 4G 시장에 첫발을 내딛었다. 삼성전자는 지난달 말 차이나모바일•차이나유니콤•차이나텔레콤 등 중국 3대 통신사에서 갤럭시S4 판매를 시작했다. 갤럭시S4는 대만 HTC를 포함한 범중국계 제조사를 제외하고 TD-LTE를 지원하는 유일한 메이저 제품이다.
애플은 삼성전자보다 5개월 이상 늦게 중국 시장에 4G 제품을 공급할 것으로 보인다. 8월 차이나모바일 4G 서비스 시작 시점에 맞추지 못하는 것은 물론이고 이후 공급도 장담할 수 없다. 중국 차이나타임즈는 씨티그룹 글로벌 증권 보고서를 인용해 “애플 아이폰5S와 저가 아이폰이 9월에나 출시될 것”이라고 보도했다.
애플이 올해 선보일 아이폰5S는 TD-LTE를 지원할 가능성이 높은데 퀄컴 RF360 칩이 상용화되는 시점과 맞물린다. RF360은 40여개 LTE 주파수 대역을 지원하는 퀄컴 최신 칩으로 하반기 상용화된다. 제품을 빨리 출시하려해도 이 칩 없이는 불가능하다. 제품이 나와도 차이나모바일과 망 연동 시험과 가격 협상 등에 상당한 시간이 걸린다.
스트래티지어낼리틱스(SA)에 따르면 지난해 중국에서 애플은 11% 점유율로 삼성전자, 레노버에 밀린 3위다. 애플이 하락하는 스마트폰 시장 점유율을 늘리려면 7억 가입자를 가진 차이나모바일과의 협력이 절실하다.
