SEOUL, KOREA – What is the most favored smartphone display size that users consider as the most optimum The answer is 4.5 inches, which is 0.5 inches bigger than the Apple iPhone and 0.5 inches smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S4.
According to market research firm Strategy Analytics’ wireless terminal research institute, smartphone users will opt for a bigger display size next time they buy a new smartphone. Consumers’ favorite display size has gradually grown. In Strategy Analytics’ 2011 survey, respondents favored 4.3 inches the most, 0.2 inches smaller than this year’s choice of 4.5 inches.
Noteworthy is that the top two smartphone manufacturers- Samsung Electronics and Apple – have yet to release 4.5 inch smartphones. The iPhone was 3.5 inches and the iPhone 5 came with a 4 inch display. The Samsung Galaxy S2 was 4.3 inches, the Galaxy S3 4.8 inches and the Galaxy S4 5 inches. Some predict that the iPhone 6 would come with a 4.5 inch display.
Meanwhile, Motorola and Lenovo launched 4.5 inch smartphones and the Nokia Lumia 928, scheduled for release on May 16, is known to have equipped with a 4.5 inch OLED display.

현재 스마트폰 이용자가 가장 적당하다고 생각하는 화면 크기는 어느 정도일까 정답은 4.5인치다. 애플 아이폰5 4인치보다 0.5인치 크고 삼성전자 갤럭시S4보다 0.5인치 작은 크기다.
시장조사기관 스트래티지어낼리틱스(SA) 무선 단말기 연구소는 스마트폰을 쓰는 사람은 다음 제품 구입 시 더 큰 화면을 원한다고 분석했다.
고객이 좋아하는 스마트폰 화면은 점점 커켰다. 2011년 조사 때 가장 선호하는 스마트폰 화면 크기는 4.3인치였는데 올해 4.5인치로 0.2인치 커졌다.
재미있는 점은 스마트폰 시장을 양분한 삼성전자와 애플 제품 중에는 4.5인치 제품이 없다는 사실이다. 아이폰은 3.5인치였다가 아이폰5에서 4인치로 화면을 키웠다. 삼성전자 갤럭시S2는 4.3인치였으며 갤럭시S3는 4.8, 갤럭시S4는 5인치다. 일부에선 애플이 아이폰6에 4.5인치 화면을 달 것으로 예측했다.
4.5인치 화면 스마트폰은 후발주자가 주로 출시했다. 모토로라가 지난해 미국서 선보인 `아트릭스 HD`, 레노버가 중국서 내놓은 `K900` 등이 4.5인치다. 노키아가 16일 출시할 고급형 `루미아 928` 역시 4.5인치 OLED 디스플레이를 썼다고 알려졌다.
물론 화면 크기가 스마트폰 구매를 절대적으로 좌우하지는 않는다. 4.5인치 스마트폰을 좋아하지만 브랜드 인지도, 가격, 통신사 등 많은 요소가 영향을 끼친다.
스마트폰 화면 크기가 커지며 사용자경험(UX) 중요성이 높아졌다. 큰 화면 스마트폰은 한 손 조작이 불편하다. 제조사들은 큰 화면을 쉽게 쓸 수 있는 UX에 공을 들인다. 조작 버튼 위치에 따라 큰 화면 사용 불편을 줄일 수 있다. 폴 브라운 SA 사용자경험프랙티스(UEP) 이사는 “소비자의 기호에 따라 제조사는 더 큰 화면을 앞다퉈 도입하고 있다”며 “한 손 조작 불편은 UX로 개선한다”고 말했다.
