Seoul, Korea - SK Innovation announced on Tuesday that its investment council recently decided to expand its #2 flexible copper clad laminate (FCCL) production line located inside Jeungpyung Industrial Complex in Chungchong Province.
For the expansion, SK Innovation plans to make KRW 90 billion investment, aiming at commercial go-alive in 2014. With the expansion completed, SK Innovation will have an annual FCCL production capacity of 9 million square meters together with its existing #1 line.
Since the company started its commercial production of FCCL in August 2011, it made a quick entry into the market by supplying the its products to Mektron of Japan, the world’s 1st PCB company, in just six months.
FCCL is the core material for flexible PCB (FPCB) used mainly for the production of smartphones. The market has recorded an explosive growth of 18% in annual average thanks to the recent smart-device fever, and the experts are anticipating it will grow into a market of KRW 1 trillion per annum by the end of 2015.
SK Innovation plans to be the world’s number 1 company in FCCL by the end of 2020 by continuing to expand its production capacity.

SK이노베이션(대표 구자영)은 최근 투자협의회를 열고 충북 증평 산업단지 내에 연성동박적층판(FCCL) 2호 생산라인을 증설하기로 했다고 14일 밝혔다.
SK이노베이션은 앞으로 약 900억원을 투자할 계획으로, 2호 생산라인은 2014년 상업 가동이 목표다. 증설이 완료되면 SK이노베이션은 연산 350만㎡ 규모의 기존 1호기와 함께 연간 900만㎡의 FCCL 생산능력을 갖추게 된다.
SK이노베이션은 지난 2011년 8월부터 FCCL을 상업생산 시작한 이후 6개월 만에 회로기판 세계 1위 업체인 일본 맥트론에 공급하는 등 시장에 빠르게 진입했다.
FCCL은 스마트폰 등에 들어가는 연성회로기판(FPCB) 핵심 소재다. 최근 스마트 기기 열풍에 따라 연 평균 18%의 폭발적인 성장세를 기록 중이며, 2015년까지 연 1조원 이상 시장으로 확대될 전망이다.
SK이노베이션은 향후 지속적인 증설을 통해 2020년까지 FCCL 분야의 세계 1위 업체로 도약한다는 목표를 세웠다.
SK이노베이션 관계자는 “이번 FCCL 2호기 증설 결정은 경기침체 국면에도 투자는 계속돼야 한다는 경영층의 의지가 모아진 결과”라고 말했다.
