SEOUL, KOREA – Replacing an iPhone 5 with a broken screen will charge the user as much as USD 229, which is more than the USD 200 price of the device with a two-year contract, and more than a third of the USD 650 cost of the phone without a contract, according to MarketWatch.
iPhone 5 repair costs have been under criticism. The report points to Apple's tight control over components as being the major contributor to high costs, even as the device's new design makes it simpler to replace the display than on previous models.
MarketWatch quoted AJ Forsythe, founder of iCracked, a repair service for iGadgets, as saying, “Replacing an iPhone 5 screen takes 5 to 10 minutes and is easier to fix than the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 screen has 27 screws and three layers while the iPhone 5 has five screws and two layers.“
Despite this, fixing an iPhone 5S screen reaches up to USD 229, much higher than USD 99 for fixing an iPhone 4S screen. This is because of Apple’s tight control on iPhone 5 components, MarketWatch says.
The iPhone-repair business is lucrative. Nearly one-third of iPhone users damaged their devices during 2012, according to a recent study by gadget insurer SquareTrade. Repairs have cost consumers nearly USD 6 billion since the iPhone was launched in 2007, MarketWatch reported.

아이폰5를 떨어뜨려 화면이 깨지면 수리비는 229달러(약 25만8000원)다. 2년 약정을 맺고 아이폰5를 사는 가격이 200달러인데 배보다 배꼽이 크다. 약정 없이 아이폰5를 사면 650달러다. 화면 수리비가 3분의 1에 달한다.
아이폰5의 수리가 도마 위에 올랐다. 26일 마켓워치는 아이폰5 부품이 아이폰4나 4S보다 비싼데다 애플이 공급량을 조절하면서 수리비가 올랐다고 지적했다. 보증기간을 연장하는 `애플케어`를 확대하려는 전략도 아이폰5 수리비 상승을 부추겼다.
마켓워치는 아이폰 전문 수리업체를 인용해 아이폰5가 기존 제품보다 고치기 쉬운 설계인데도 비용은 더 많이 나온다고 꼬집었다. 아이폰4 화면은 27개 나사와 3개 층으로 구성됐는데 아이폰5는 나사 5개와 2개 층 구조다. 아이폰5 화면을 교체하는데 걸리는 시간은 5~10분 남짓이다.
수리가 쉬워 인건비 상승 요인은 없는데 가격은 2배 이상 차이난다. 아이폰4S 화면 교체 비용은 99달러인데 아이폰5는 229달러에 달한다. 물론 아이폰5 화면은 4인치로 3.5인치보다 비싸질 수밖에 없지만 애플이 아이폰5 부품 공급을 까다롭게 조율하면서 가격이 떨어지지 않는다. 휴대폰 전문 수리점은 비싼 부품을 감당할 수 없어 아이폰5 서비스를 하지 못한다. 싸게 수리 받을 곳이 없는 고객들은 고가의 애플 서비스를 받을 수밖에 없다.
아이폰 수리는 수익성이 높다. 전자제품 보험사 스퀘어트레이드에 따르면 지난해 3분의 1에 달하는 아이폰 사용자가 수리를 받았다. 2007년 아이폰이 출시된 후 수리 시장은 60억달러(약 6조7000억원)에 달했다. 애플은 부품 조절로 아이폰 보증 기간을 연장하는 `애플케어(99달러)`를 받도록 유도한다.
