Korean Office Workers "Not Happy" with Their Job...SERI

SEOUL, KOREA - The happiness score of Korea's office workers is below a passing grade, a study said. According to a research report "Korea's White-collar Workers Talk about Happiness" published by Samsung Economic Research Institute on June 12, the average score for satisfaction with their jobs was 53 and that for emotional degree of happiness was 48 out of 100. The survey was conducted on a total of 849 employees with corporations.
 
By age group, those in their 20s had the lowest level of happiness with 48 points, followed by the 30s (53 points), the 40s (56), and those between 50 and 55 (61). The common characteristics of office workers belonging to the top-20 percent of the happiness index included those who are optimistic about their lives, try to find meaning in their work, have good personal relationships with wide-ranging people around them.
 
As ways to improve the degree of happiness among cubicle-bound workers, the report suggested exerting conscious effort to maintain positive state of mind, managing an appropriate level of energy all the time, and expanding interdependent personal relationships. 
 
It also advised to top managers to pay more attention to their people's work happiness by regularly checking on them while leaving the communication channel open.
