Seoul, Korea - Samsung Electronics launched a new Solid State Drive (SSD) about 2.5 times faster than the existing ones. The company plans to gain an upper hand not only in the ultrabook market, but also in the next-generation notebook PC market with the new product.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 17th that the company has started the full-scale production of XP941 SSD, an SSD with ultra-speed PCI express (PCIe) interface. PCIe is a standard that provides faster data transmission speed than that of existing SSD SATA interface. The 512 PCIe SSD mass-produced by Samsung Electronics has a continuous read speed of 1,400MB per second, which is a speed equivalent to processing of 100 full HD movies in 6 minutes. It is 7 times faster than the HDDs and 2.5 times faster than the existing SSDs.
The new SSD is much lighter and smaller, also. It has only one-seventh volume of the existing 2.5 inch SSDs, allowing the ultrabook designers to save space for other parts, such as more battery. The new SSD weighs only about 6 grams, one-ninth of the existing SSDs.
Younghyun Jeon, VP of Memory Business Division at Samsung Electronics commented, “we will introduce the next-generation SSDs with greater storage capacity and performance to create innovative computing environment.”

삼성전자(대표 권오현)는 초고속 PCI 익스프레스(PCIe) 인터페이스를 적용한 XP941 SSD 양산에 돌입했다고 17일 밝혔다. PCIe는 기존 SSD SATA 인터페이스보다 전송 속도를 개선한 규격이다.
삼성전자가 양산한 512GB PCIe SSD는 초당 1400MB의 연속 읽기 속도를 구현했다. 풀HD급 영화 100편을 6분 내에 처리할 수 있는 수준이다. 하드디스크드라이브(HDD)보다 7배, 기존 SSD보다 2.5배 빠른 속도다.
부피와 무게도 크게 줄였다. 기존 2.5인치 SSD의 7분의 1 부피에 불과해 울트라북 등에 배터리 탑재량을 늘릴 수 있다. 무게는 기존 2.5인치 SSD의 9분의 1에 불과한 6g이다.
전영현 삼성전자 메모리사업부 전략마케팅팀장(부사장)은 “PCIe SSD를 고성능에다 얇은 디자인까지 구현할 수 있다”며 “앞으로 용량과 성능을 동시에 높인 차세대 SSD를 적기에 출시해 혁신적인 컴퓨팅 환경을 만들어 갈 것”이라고 말했다.
