SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors saw their market share rise in Europe, although their sales fell there. They have benefited from a sharp decline in sales of their rivals in Europe.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), Hyundai Motor sold 176,157 units in Europe during the period from January to May 2013, down 1.9 percent from a year ago. Its market share there, however, rose by 0.2 percentage point to 3.6 percent.
In contrast to a decline in sales of Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors marked a 2.4-percent growth in sales there to 139,786 units, with its market share rising by 0.3 percentage point to 2.8 percent.
Their combined sales in Europe totaled 315,943 in the January-May period of this year, down slightly from 316,130 a year ago. Their combined market share, however, rose from 5.8 percent to 6.3 percent.
Their rival automakers suffered a sharp decline in sales in Europe including Volkswagen (-3.3%), PSA Peugeot Citroen (-13.9%), Renault (-5.9%), GM (-11.0%), and Ford (-12.8%).
