Seoul, Korea - The DigiTimes of Taiwan reported that TSMC has agreed to produce Application Processors (AP), the core parts to iPhone and iPads, for coming three years. According to the report, TSMC is to produce the next generation chips of Apple, the A Series, using 20, 16 and 10 nano processes. The A Series chip is the core part that functions as the brain of iPhones and iPads, which had been supplied by Samsung Electronics exclusively.
Apple had been trying to diversify the supply routes of its core parts for the last two years, as it had been involved in the patent lawsuits of the century. TSMC is to start the production of A8 processors from July for the iPhones and iPads to be shipped to the market next year. The company will start increasing its production volume of A8 processors from late this year and increase it further during the Q1 next year, when it completes the preparation for 20 nano processing facilities. Starting from Q3 next year, TSMC plans to start producing A9 and A9X processors for Apple, using the 16 nano process. The A8 processor is to be used for the iPhones to be introduced early next year, and A9 and A9X processors are for the iPhones and iPads to be launched thereafter.
TSMC will dedicate lines 4, 5 and 6 at its Plant 14 in south Taiwan, which used to be the 12 inch wafer production plant, exclusively for Apple. However, the DigiTimes added that it has not been confirmed if TSMC is the exclusive supplier of APs to Apple. The Apple Insider, a media dedicated to Apple news, questioned the unconfirmed report of DigiTimes, and suggested that Intel, the supplier of CPUs to Mac PCs, may produce the A Series chips.

대만 디지타임스는 TSMC가 애플과 향후 3년간 아이폰과 아이패드 핵심 부품인 AP 생산 계약을 맺었다고 보도했다. TSMC는 20, 16, 10나노 공정으로 애플 차세대 A시리즈 칩을 생산한다. A시리즈 칩은 아이폰과 아이패드의 뇌 역할을 하는 핵심 부품으로 삼성전자가 독점 공급했다.
애플은 지난 2년간 삼성전자와 세기의 특허 소송을 벌이며 핵심 부품 공급 다변화를 꾀했다. TSMC는 7월부터 내년 나올 아이폰과 아이패드에 들어갈 A8을 생산에 들어간다. 연말부터 A8프로세서 생산을 늘리기 시작해 20나노 공정 기술 설비가 완공되는 내년 1분기부터 생산량을 늘릴 계획이다. 내년 3분기부터는 16나노 공정으로 애플 A9과 A9X 프로세서 생산을 시작한다. 애플 A8 프로세서는 내년 초 출시될 아이폰에 쓰인다. A9/A9x는 이후 출시될 아이폰과 아이패드 용이다.
TSMC는 대만 남부에 있는 14공장 4•5•6라인의 12인치 웨이퍼 생산 공장을 애플 전용 공장으로 사용한다. 20나노 공정이 만들어지는 내년 1분기 생산 물량을 대폭 늘릴 계획이다. 디지타임즈는 TSMC가 독점 애플 칩 공급사인지는 확인되지 않는다고 덧붙였다.
반면 애플 전문미디어 애플인사이더는 디지타임즈가 주로 확인되지 않은 소문을 보도해왔다며 이번 계약 신빙성에 의문을 표했다. 애플인사이더는 맥프로세서 공급사인 인텔이 A시리즈 칩을 생산할 가능성도 있다고 점쳤다.
