Seoul, Korea - Most of the domestic sapphire ingot manufactures have increased production as the LED packaging market gets better. For instance, Sapphire Technology, one of the leading domestic ingot manufacturers, put the production line into full operation last month. The company expects surplus after the Q3 and carefully plans to expand production facility if necessary. DK AZTEC is also set to expand the production line in the second half due to the increase in the 6 inch LED ingot demand. LG Siltron and Rubicon of the U.S. have also increased their production. Sapphire ingots are basic materials for LED products and the relevant industries recover 2-3 months after the recovery of the LED full package industry. Since March, the operation rate of LED package production line has increased and the remaining inventories have been sold out. This seems to be the main contributor to the recovery of the Sapphire ingot industry, which is the downstream industry. Other factors of the recovery include the diversification of sapphire ingot application. Apple plans to use sapphire for rear camera cover and home button of iPhone 5. Sapphire ingot is suitable for sensor covers because its mid infrared ray filtration rate and dielectric constant of are higher than those of the tempered glass. LED 핵심 원소재 사파이어 잉곳 풀가동…LED 생태계 가동 `서광`
사파이어 잉곳 업체들이 풀가동 체제에 돌입했다. 발광다이오드(LED) 패키지 시장이 회복되면서 후방 산업도 서서히 살아나는 조짐이다. 스마트폰 카메라 커버, 전면 커버 등에 사파이어 도입량이 많아지면서 잉곳 시장의 다변화 가능성도 커졌다.
7일 업계에 따르면 최근 국내외 사파이어 잉곳 업체 대부분의 가동률이 최고치를 기록하고 있다. 국내 선발 잉곳 업체인 사파이어테크놀로지(대표 이희춘)는 지난달 풀가동을 시작했다. 생산 능력은 2인치 웨이퍼 기준 월 120만~130만㎜다. 지난 1분기 가동률이 11%로 떨어졌던 것과는 대조적이다. 3분기 이후에는 흑자 전환도 내다본다. 이 회사는 2·4인치 LED 웨이퍼용 사파이어 잉곳 국내 최대 공급업체다.
이희춘 사장은 “조명용 LED 수요도 늘고 있고 스마트폰용 카메라 커버 등 주문이 이어지면서 가동률이 완전히 회복됐다”고 말했다. 추가 투자에는 신중한 시각이지만 필요하다면 증설도 추진할 계획이다.
DK아즈텍은 6인치 LED용 잉곳 생산량이 늘면서 하반기부터 생산 능력을 강화한다는 계획이다. 100㎏급 잉곳 생성 장비(그로어)를 도입해 올 연말까지 월 60만~70만㎜로 생산 능력을 확대한다. 지난해 업황 악화로 자본잠식 상태에 빠졌던 이 회사는 동국제강 그룹의 지원과 감자로 부채비율을 170%로 줄이고 내년 이후 신규 투자를 준비 중이다.
LG실트론 역시 지지부진했던 사파이어 잉곳·웨이퍼 사업을 대폭 강화한다. 이 회사 관계자는 “6인치 사파이어 잉곳 중심으로 신규 투자를 진행 중”이라며 “꾸준하게 장비를 발주하고 있다”고 말했다.
세계 최대 사파이어 잉곳 업체인 미국 루비콘도 가동률이 상승했다. 이 회사 관계자는 “사파이어 잉곳 가동률이 지난해에 비해 많이 올랐다”고 전했다.
LED 기본 소재인 사파이어 잉곳은 완제품·패키지에 비해 업황 회복 속도가 2~3개월 더디다. 지난 3월 이후 LED 패키지 가동률이 상승하고 기존 재고 물량을 떨어낸 효과가 최후방 산업인 사파이어 잉곳에까지 미친 것이다.
최근 사파이어의 응용 시장이 다양화된 것도 업황 회복에 영향을 미쳤다. 애플은 아이폰5부터 후면 카메라 커버 유리로 사파이어를 사용한다. 아이폰5S는 홈 버튼에도 사파이어를 쓸 것으로 알려졌다. 강화 유리보다 유전상수가 높고 중적외선 투과율이 좋기 때문에 각종 센서 커버로 사용하기에도 유리하다. 사파이어 잉곳 용도가 다양해지면서 시장 가격도 영향을 받을 것으로 예상된다. 현재 잉곳 가격은 2인치 기준 ㎜당 3.1~3.5달러다. 카메라 커버 단가는 1.2달러 선으로, ㎜당 가격이 훨씬 높다.
사파이어 잉곳 회복세는 장비 업계에도 긍정적인 효과를 줄 것으로 예상된다. 사파이어 잉곳 성장장비(그로어) 업체인 다애테크 관계자는 “하반기 한국·중국·대만 잉곳 업체 몇 곳이 90~100㎏급 장비 발주를 했다”며 “대구경 잉곳 수율이 안정화되는 내년 상반기부터 대규모 증설 투자도 기대하고 있다”고 말했다.
