Seoul, Korea - HP Korea is planning to establish a cloud center here in Korea, which would play a hub of the Asian cloud service. Such a move of the company is drawing attention as it would bring a new change to the local cloud market.
“HP Korea is active in having a local cloud center to support the cloud service in the Asia-Pacific region. As the head office believes Korea is a better place to set the center than its neighboring countries including Japan and China in terms of network infrastructure and geological features. The final decision will be made around the second half of the year,” says an official from HP Korea.
HP is providing ‘HP Cloud Service’, a public cloud service, only through its US-based data center. And it is now building a local center for Europe, the Middle East and Africa and is planning to establish one in Korea to provide the cloud service for customers in the region of Asia.
Meanwhile, Amazon and Google have already advanced into the Asia-Pacific market, but are not bearing any fruitful results. HP Korea is going to lead the market, having its Asia-Pacific cloud center in Korea, a country with well-established network infrastructure and low power rates. The key factors for the public cloud service are the service stability and speed and the price.
Compared with the existing cloud service providers, HP is, in particular, better equipped with all necessary devices needed for a cloud data center, including servers, storages, networks, operation management solutions and thus takes over an advantageous position regarding the price competitiveness.
HP Korea is discussing with KT, a company that is already providing various cloud services for the domestic market and has outstanding operation knowledge and network infrastructure. KT can also utilize the brand power and customers of HP to move to overseas markets.

한국HP가 국내에 클라우드데이터센터 설립을 추진한다. 국내 센터 설립으로 아시아 클라우드 서비스의 허브 역할을 맡겠다는 계획이다. 마이크로소프트(MS)·오라클 등 글로벌 IT 기업들이 국내 센터 설립 계획을 백지화한 상황에서 한국HP의 이 같은 움직임이 국내 클라우드 시장에 어떤 변화를 일으킬지 관심이 쏠리고 있다.
7일 한국HP 고위 관계자는 “최근 한국HP가 아·태지역 클라우드 서비스를 지원하기 위해 국내에 센터를 유치하는 것을 적극 추진하고 있다”며 “본사에서도 일본, 중국에 비해 한국이 네트워크 인프라, 지형적 특성 등 입지 조건에서 많은 장점이 있다고 평가하고 있어 가장 유력하다”고 말했다. 그는 이어 “늦어도 올 하반기엔 최종 결정날 것”이라고 설명했다.
HP는 퍼블릭 클라우드 서비스인 `HP 클라우드 서비스`를 미국 내 데이터센터를 통해서만 서비스하고 있다. 최근 유럽·중동·아프리카(EMEA) 지역을 서비스하기 위한 현지 센터를 추가 건립하고 있으며, 아시아·태평양 지역에는 없는 상황이다. 현재 국내 고객들은 미국의 데이터센터를 이용해 서비스를 사용할 수 있다.
한국HP는 지난해 말부터 아·태지역 클라우드 서비스 지원을 위한 센터를 국내에 유치할 수 있도록 전방위로 나섰다. 국내 센터를 활용해 국내는 물론이고 아시아권 고객을 대상으로 클라우드 서비스를 하겠다는 계획이다.
앞서 아마존, MS, 구글 등이 아·태 시장에 진출했지만 아직까지 뚜렷한 성과를 내지 못한 실정이다. 반면에 한국HP는 높은 수준의 네트워크 인프라를 갖췄다는 점과 낮은 전기요금 등을 장점으로 앞세워 시장을 선점할 계획이다. 퍼블릭 클라우드 서비스는 서비스 안정성과 속도, 가격이 가장 중요한 요인으로 꼽히기 때문이다.
특히 HP는 기존 클라우드 서비스 업체들과 비교해 서버, 스토리지, 네트워크, 운영관리 솔루션 등 클라우드데이터센터에 필요한 모든 제품을 갖추고 있어 가격경쟁력에서 절대적으로 유리한 입장이다.
한국HP는 국내 클라우드센터 설립 파트너로 KT와 논의 중이다. 이미 국내에서 다양한 클라우드 서비스를 제공하고 있는 KT의 운용 노하우와 뛰어난 네트워크 인프라를 활용할 수 있기 때문이다.
KT 측에서도 HP의 글로벌 인지도와 고객 등을 활용해 해외 시장 진출 통로를 마련할 수 있다.
KT 측 관계자는 “HP와 함께 센터를 설립해서 상생할 수 있는 방안을 검토하고 있다”며 “HP와 KT가 브랜드를 공유해 클라우드 서비스하는 것도 논의하고 있다”고 말했다.
HP의 퍼블릭 클라우드 서비스는 오픈스택 기반으로 구축돼 세계에서 가장 큰 오픈스택 구축사례로 손꼽힌다.
지난해 한국에 클라우드센터 건립을 계획했던 마이크로소프트는 계획을 수정해 우리나라가 아닌 일본에 클라우드센터를 짓는 것으로 알려졌다. 앞서 지난 5월에는 호주 뉴사우스웨일스주와 빅토리아주에 각각 클라우드 데이터센터를 설립한다고 발표했다.
