SEOUL, KOREA – Leaving behind a spell of sluggishness in the first half, the domestic auto industry is projected to see all of the domestic car production, auto exports and domestic demand turn around in the second half.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), domestic auto production, auto exports and domestic demand for cars are expected to gain 6.5%, 9.7% and 1.3%, respectively, backed by an end to weekend work stoppages at Hyundai and Kia and the low base effect from the first quarter.
Auto production for the second half is forecast to increase 6.5% y-o-y to 2.32 million units, taking the 2013 auto production to 4.6 million units (up 0.8% y-o-y).
Auto exports are expected to climb 9.7% y-o-y to 1,613,000 units, taking the 2013 auto exports to 3.2 million units. Such rosy projections are based on major automakers’ normalized supply and tariff reductions under the South Korea-EU FTA.
Domestic demand for cars is likely to tick up 1.3% to 799,000 units, buoyed up by growing demand for imported cars, domestic automakers’ reinforced marketing campaigns and the launch of new models.

하반기 국내 자동차 생산, 수출 및 내수 모두 `턴어라운드` 전망
올 하반기 국내 자동차 생산, 수출, 내수가 모두 증가세로 전환하며 상반기 부진을 만회할 전망이다. 이에 따라 연간 자동차 생산, 수출 및 내수는 작년 수준을 기록할 것으로 예상됐다.
9일 산업통상자원부에 따르면 하반기 국내 자동차 생산, 수출 및 내수는 작년 같은 기간보다 각각 6.5%, 9.7%, 1.3% 성장할 것으로 예상됐다. 이 같은 전망은 주요 업체의 주말 특근 정상화에 따른 생산 회복과 기저효과에 따른 것으로 풀이된다.
하반기 자동차 생산은 총 232만대로 작년 같은 기간보다 6.5% 증가할 전망이다. 이에 따라 올 전체 자동차 생산량은 460만대로 작년보다 0.8% 성장할 것으로 예상됐다. 하반기 생산이 늘어나는 배경은 현대•기아차의 주말 특근이 정상화되고, 기아차 광주공장 증산 합의에 따른 공급 능력 확대에 따른 것이다. 또 지난해 임단협 타결 이전까지 이어진 부분 파업으로 발생한 공급 차질(18만여대) 등의 기저효과로 풀이된다.
수출은 161만3000대로 작년 같은 기간보다 9.7% 늘어날 것으로 예상됐다. 이에 따라 올 전체 수출 물량은 320만대에 달할 전망이다. 하반기 수출 증가는 주요 업체의 공급 정상화와 한-EU FTA 추가 관세 인하 효과에 힘입어 해외 시장 불확실성 증대에도 불구하고 선전할 것으로 예상됐다.
하반기 내수 시장은 79만9000대로 1.3% 성장할 전망이다. 특히 수입차의 지속적인 증가세 속에 국내 업체들의 마케팅 강화와 신차 효과가 수요를 견인할 것으로 예상됐다.
한편 올 상반기 누적 자동차 생산(228만대), 수출(159만대) 및 내수(75만대)는 모두 작년 같은 기간보다 각각 4.3%, 6.7%, 0.8% 감소한 것으로 나타났다.
