Seoul, Korea - Online/offline book stores including Kyobo Book Center, Interpark Books and Aladin Communication have started e-book rental services. Industry insiders view this as a catalyst to bring changes into the e-book market. The publishing industry, however, doesn’t seem to welcome such moves by book stores. Three mega book stores are providing or set to provide e-book rental services. Kyobo Book Center started e-book rental service in February by launching ‘SAM’, a membership based e-book rental service. Interpark Books introduced an ‘eBook rental store’. Aladin Communication plans to launch an e-book rental service in the second half. Interpark Books lends 15,000 varieties of e-books including general books, novels as well as comic books at the moment, and is going to expand the available books to 50,000 in the second half of this year. Customers can read books at reasonable and affordable prices through e-book lending services. Experts expect this to boost the e-book market. “Book stores are highly likely to provide similar services, if the e-book rental services prove to be a successful business model”, “This will further promote the growth of e-book market”, said a person from the industry. Nonetheless, the publishing industry argues that the e-book rental service is anti-cultural and based on industrial concept. The publishing community took issue with the e-book rental service in a statement saying “Stop the e-book rental service that threatens the very survival of publishing industry.”
대형서점들 전자책 대여 서비스 `너도나도`…시장 변화 기폭제 되나
교보문고, 인터파크도서, 알라딘 등 국내외 온·오프 대형서점들이 전자책 대여 서비스에 뛰어들었다. 업계는 다양한 전자책 대여 서비스가 권당 결제·소액 구매에 집중됐던 전자책 시장에 변화를 불러올 기폭제가 될 것으로 내다봤다. 하지만 전자책 콘텐츠의 뿌리라 할 수 있는 출판계는 대여서비스 확산에 크게 반발하고 있어 논란이 예상된다.
◇잇따라 “빌려보세요” 서비스인터파크도서는 원하는 전자책을 일정기간 빌려볼 수 있는 `이북(eBook) 대여점` 서비스를 최근 선보이고 독자몰이에 나섰다. 알라딘은 하반기에 전자책 대여 서비스를 시작할 예정이라고 10일 밝혔다. 교보문고는 지난 2월 회원제 전자책 대여 서비스인 샘(SAM)을 시작했다.인터파크도서는 이북 대여점의 강점이 다양한 종류의 전자책과 저렴한 가격이라고 설명했다. 인터파크도서는 현재 일반도서, 장르소설, 만화 등 1만5000종의 전자책이 대여 가능하며 올해 하반기까지 5만종까지 도서를 확대할 계획이라고 밝혔다.임세원 인터파크도서 이북 사업 팀장은 “세계적 트렌드인 전자책 대여 서비스를 합리적 구조로 선보이게 됐다”며 “한 권씩 대여하면 가격 부담이 덜어져 알뜰하게 문화생활을 할 수 있다”고 강조했다.◇알라딘도 가세 `시장 돌풍` 예고교보문고, 인터파크도서 등 대형서점이 전자책 대여 서비스를 경쟁적으로 내놓자 온라인 대형서점 알라딘도 전자책 대여서비스를 하반기에 내놓는다. 알라딘 관계자는 “대형 온라인 서점들이 전자책 서비스를 시작하니 우리도 서비스를 더 이상 미룰 수 없게 됐다”며 “현재 전자책 대여 서비스 개발 작업에 들어갔으며 하반기를 목표로 최대한 빨리 론칭할 계획”이라고 말했다.전자책 대여 서비스를 처음 시작한 서점은 교보문고다. 지난 2월 교보문고는 회원제 전자책 대여 서비스인 샘(SAM)을 시작했다. 연회비를 내면 금액에 따라 전자책을 일정 기간 빌려 볼 수 있다. 이로써 대형 서점 세 곳이 전자책 대여 서비스를 이미 전개하고 있거나 준비 중이다.전문가들도 전자책 대여 서비스가 전자책 시장 활성화에 기여할 것으로 내다봤다. 장기영 전자출판협회 사무국장은 “교보문고, 인터파크도서 등 대형 서점이 일반도서를 포함한 전자책 대여 서비스가 비즈니스 모델로 성공하면 다른 서점도 다양한 대여 서비스를 시작할 가능성이 높다”며 “대여서비스는 전자책 활성화에 기여할 것”이라고 강조했다.◇“반 문화적 발상” 반발도반면에 출판계는 전자책에 대여 서비스를 접목하는 것은 산업적 논리에 기반한 반(反)문화적 발상이라고 비판한다. 예전 비디오테이프 대여업과 별반 다를 게 없다는 논리다. 출판인회의 한 관계자는 “전자책 대여 서비스는 가격, 문화 등 다양한 면에서 문제가 많다”고 말했다. 출판인회의는 지난 1월 `출판 생태계 위협하는 회원제 전자책 서비스 즉각 중단하라`라며 성명을 발표했고 3월에는 전자책 대여 서비스의 문제점을 공개적으로 문제 삼은바 있다.
