Seoul, Korea - According to the industry on Tuesday, POSCO is preparing for a Proof of Concept (PoC) for the introduction of the Big Data system and presented its 'Big Data Analysis Infrastructure Implementation Solution PoC Plan' to the related domestic and overseas vendors. A list of big names in the Big Data, including Oracle and EMC, are known to have decided to bid for POSCO's project.
POSCO is planning to use the big data analysis system to forecast the nickel price and analyze the product defects. Based on the text-mining technology that searches massive amount of texts for a meaningful data, POSCO will predict the international nickel price to control its procurement cost. The product defect analysis will be used to improve quality of its wide range of steel products.
POSCO's PoC is composed of establishment of the Big Data architecture, verification of the Big Data solution functionality and verification of applicability to actual work. In more detail, the PoC includes analysis system role, establishment of integrated architecture, verification of solution functionality for the future adaptation and whether it can be used for decision making. POSCO had originally planned to complete the PoC by early next month and start the evaluation, but had postponed the schedule recently.
The industry is showing a greater interest to POSCO's project, after Hyundai Motor Company making a snail-paced progress in its Big Data project. HMC had already completed its PoC for the introduction of Big Data, but had not made any visible movement since then.
삼성전자·현대차 이어 포스코도 `빅데이터` 도입
삼성전자와 현대자동차에 이어 포스코가 빅데이터 도입에 나섰다. 올해 들어 추진되는 대기업 빅데이터 사업 중 가장 큰 규모가 될 것으로 보여 업계 이목이 집중되고 있다.
16일 업계에 따르면 포스코는 국내외 업체를 대상으로 빅데이터 도입을 위한 개념증명(PoC)에 나설 계획이다. PoC는 필요로 하는 성능을 사전에 점검하는 과정으로, 포스코는 `빅데이터 분석 인프라 구축 솔루션 PoC 추진계획`을 관련 업체들에 전달했다. 오라클, EMC, 스플렁크 등 주요 빅데이터 솔루션 업체가 대거 PoC 참여를 결정한 것으로 알려졌다.
포스코는 빅데이터 도입으로 `니켈 가격 예측`과 `품질 결함 분석`에 나설 계획이다. 니켈은 스테인리스강의 주원료로, 가격 동향은 포스코의 사업에 직접적인 영향을 미친다. 다량의 텍스트 중 의미있는 정보를 찾는 텍스트마이닝(Textmining) 기술을 바탕으로 니켈 가격을 예측해 사업에 반영할 것으로 보인다. 품질 결함 분석은 다양한 철강제품 제조 시 활용될 전망이다. 원재료 배합 비율, 온도 등을 분석하고 품질 결함 원인을 밝혀 개선에 나설 것으로 기대된다.
PoC는 △빅데이터 아키텍처 정립 △빅데이터 솔루션 기능 확인 △업무 적용 가능성 검증 등으로 구성됐다. 세부적으로는 분석계 시스템 역할과 통합 아키텍처의 정립, 향후 도입을 대비한 솔루션 기능 확인, 의사결정에 활용 여부 확인 등이 포함됐다. 포스코는 당초 다음달 초 PoC를 완료하고 평가에 나설 계획이었지만 최근 일정을 연기했다.
포스코 관계자는 “종전 시나리오의 보완·확대와 필요한 하드웨어(HW) 구축 등을 위해 일정을 당분간 연기했다”며 “관련 작업이 오래 걸리지는 않을 것”이라고 말했다.
업계는 포스코 사업에 큰 기대를 보였다. 특성상 대규모 프로젝트로 확대될 가능성이 높다는 평가다. 최근 현대차의 빅데이터 사업이 더뎌져 포스코 프로젝트에 더욱 관심이 집중되고 있다. 현대차는 빅데이터 도입을 위한 PoC를 완료했지만 이후 별다른 움직임을 보이지 않고 있다.
업계 한 관계자는 “웬만한 빅데이터 관련 기업은 모두 포스코 사업 PoC에 참여하는 것으로 안다”며 “이번 사업은 포스코 그룹 전체 빅데이터 표준으로 정립돼 향후 계열사로 확대될 것”으로 기대했다.
