In the bidding, Doosan competed with global water treatment specialist contractors including France's Degremont Technologies and Israel's IDE Technologies. The plant will be located in Antofagasta, a port city in northern Chile about 1,100 kilometers north of Santiago. Starting in mid-2016, the plant will produce about 220,000 tons of fresh water a day through reverse osmosis technology.
The water thus processed will be delivered to the Escondida Mine at the altitude of 3,000 meters through a 180-kilometer pipeline. Doosan Heavy will be responsible for supplying equipment and materials, as well as pilot operations for the plant. Yoon Seok-won, president of Doosan's Water Business Group, said, "Due to heightened mining activities in Latin American countries including Chile, we expect the demand for industrial water to rise rapidly and to see additional desalination orders."
