In the hope of entering one country among three advanced nanotechnology powers in the world by 2015, the government is aiming to secure the best nanotechnology in the world over 30 items by investing a total of 4.855 trillion won (US$5.2 billion) until the upcoming 2015.

At this juncture, the 5th International Nanotech Symposium & Exhibition in Korea (NANOTECHNOLOGY KOREA 2007) to be held over three days from August 29th to 31st, 2007, is being watched with keen interest since that Symposium & Exhibition is designed to facilitate nanotechnology industrialization and to exchange research outcome.

This Nanotechnology Korea 2007 will be held in KINTEX, Goyang, Gyeonggi province, Korea, with the distinctive theme of Nanotechnology, Invitation to the Future.

Regarding nanotechnology trends at home and abroad, countries around the world are spurring on nanotechnology development investment enlargement and commercialization. Korea too has embarked to map out a nanotechnology roadmap to cope with the future's nanotechnology demand according to the second term nanotechnology general development plan ('06~'15), according to Nanotechnology Korea 2007 Secretariat (www.nanokorea.or.kr).

It is said that standardization initiative competition of advanced countries for the purpose of nanotechnology market preoccupation is unfolded briskly in international organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and OECD. Alongside of this, nanotechnology material's hazard assessment research too about environment and the human body is being beefed up centering on advanced countries like the United States, EU, and Japan.

Concerning staple outcome of the nanotechnology field in 2006, officials responsible for nanotechnology source technology development at MOST (the Ministry of Science & Technology) said: "In 2006, the government invested 228.8 billion won [US$296 million] in nanotechnology field following 105.2 billion won in 2001 and 248.0 billion won in 2004."

In view of paper announcement, Korea has maintained the fifth place in the world in Scientific Citation Index (SCI), increasing from 408 papers in 2001 (the 8th place) through 1,719 papers in 2004 (the 6th place) to 1,845 papers (the 5th place) in 2006. Korea's US registration patent as well is continuously on the rise with 354 patents (the 3rd place in the world) in 2005 in comparison with 80 patents (the 6th place) in 2001, according to MOST officials.

In 2007, the government aims to spur even more on securing technology with the view of entering one of the advanced nanotechnology three powers globally.

According to such propulsion plan, the government decided to enlarge convergence technology development support such as IT, BT and ET which grafted nanotechnology.

Besides nanotechnology related infrastructure construction and activation for the purpose of research outcome and commercialization facilitation, the government is concentrating its efforts on nurturing special systematic manpower, securing the core source technology continuously, and facilitating early commercialization.

Standardization for boosting international competitiveness and strengthening social and technological influence assessment too are one of the staple propulsion priorities in 2007.

The purpose of this 5th International Nanotech Symposium & Exhibition in Korea which will be held under such a background is to provide scientists, engineers and researchers with chances to exchange research activities & information and to discuss the future research directions in the rapidly developing nanotechnology area.

Furthermore, it is also aimed to share the friendship among the participants. Many leading scientists are invited from 5 countries to present the most recent research progresses in this field.
