SEOUL, KOREA- The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation announced on September 25 that it ordered recalls of 662,519 cars made by Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors due to malfunction in starting and brake lights, caused by defects in brake switch contact. 

The Hyundai and Kia cars subject to the recalls are found to have a brake switch contact problem, which could cause a problem in constant speed driving unit control devices and steering control devices.

 For Hyundai Motor, the cars subject to recalls include 185,178 units of Sonata produced between October 2008 and January 2011, 69,253 units of Tucson produced between September 2009 and November 2010, 50,270 units of Genesis produced between March 2009 and November 2010, 38,174 units of Avante between July 2010 and January 2011, and 26,148 units of Grandeur between January 2009 and November 2010.

For Kia Motors, the cars subject to recalls include 63,096 units of K5 (May 2010-April 2011), 61,870 units of K5 (August 2008-September 2010) and 49,711 units of Sportage (January 2010-June 2011).

The two car makers will offer a free exchange of brake switches for the vehicles concerned through their service centers from the beginning of next month.
