BOHEMIA, NY - CookingSchools.com, an online directory of cooking colleges, urges parents to teach children to cook to encourage healthier eating habits.
According to the February 7th article posted on Times Economist titled "Teaching kids to cook helps instill healthy eating habits," many parents have found that the best way to get their children to eat vegetables is to let them cook. The article says children typically enjoy the food they make way more than food they do not make. To inspire children to cook, Island Health in Victoria, British Columbia, launched the "Eat Well, Get Moving" program.
The article says the new program is being used to teach kids to cook using more fruits and vegetables. They introduce the healthy ingredients to the kids then let them make dishes using those ingredients. By introducing healthy eating habits at a young age, the article says it has a better chance of being translated when they are older.
Andrew Girard, a representative at CookingSchools.com, a directory of culinary arts schools, discusses the importance of healthy eating for children. "Eating fruits and vegetables is very important," he says. "Research has found that around 50 percent of children do not receive the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. Many children are either overweight or obese. Teaching children how to cook is a great way to instill these healthy eating habits. When a child makes their own food then they are more likely to enjoy these foods."
