SEOUL, KOREA - LG Chem is likely to supply electric car batteries to Renault–Nissan Alliance too. According to foreign media reports on September 16 including Reuters, Renault–Nissan is currently negotiating with LG Chem to get delivery of EV batteries.
Earlier, Renault–Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn had hinted in an EV test driving event held in Nantes, France, "Renault–Nissan will expand its battery supplier network in addition to Automotive Energy Supply Corp. that it established jointly with Japan's NEC."
The media reports said that the Franco-Japanese car maker will mount LG Chem-supplied batteries on the new electric cars to be produced from next year. Currently the batteries produced by Automotive Energy Supply Corp. are 15-20 percent higher in prices than those of LG Chem.
Renault–Nissan launched the Leaf, the world's first mass-produced EV, in December 2010 in the United States and Japan. The cumulative number of Leafs sold has surpassed the 100,000 level early this year.
