Chicken prices have fallen to a record low level, making chicken farmers' woe deepen. In an effort to encourage chicken consumption, Lotte Mart will hold a special promotion event for seven days between September 25 and October 1. The discount retailer will offer Korean chicken at deep discount prices as the Korean chicken inventories remain high due to higher prices than regular one.

 

For example, the chicken for soup is sold at 5,500 won per each (over 1 kg), about a half of the current market price. For the promotional event, Lotte Mart procured 80,000 chickens (about 80 tons) with Harim.

 

Kim Hwan-woong, Lotte Mart's chicken merchandiser, said, "Due to a supply glut of chicken, it is expected chicken producers to take huge losses. In order to minimize the loss to the farmers while providing chicken at lower prices, we prepared this event."
