SEOUL, KOREA - Korea’s imports of passenger cars are growing rapidly, with cumulative imports passing the 1 million mark in August.
This milestone was achieved in 27 years after Korea opened its door to import cars in January 1987.
According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, the number of passenger cars Korea have imported during January-August period totaled 1,006,328 units, up 16,633 units from 989,695 units a month ago.
If commercial vehicles were included, Korea’s imports of foreign vehicles reached 1,051,751 units.
During the January-July period of this year, the sales of import cars stood at 112,375 units. Considering that import car sales, in general, are higher in second half than in first half, the annual sales of import cars are expected to surpass the 200,000 level this year, first in history.
