The number of Internet newspapers in Korea rose to 4,916 in 2013 from 286 in 2005, with the number of their employees rising by 52 percent during the period. Since the Internet newspaper registration scheme was introduced in 2005, the number of online newspapers increased 17 folds over the past eight years.
According to the Korea Press Foundation on April 10, the number of Internet newspapers registered in Korea as of late 2013 totaled 4,916. This figure is 17.2 times higher than 286 registered in 2005 when the government introduced the Internet newspaper registration system.
The number of registered Internet newspapers rose to 626 in 2006, 1,282 in 2008, 2,484 in 2010, 3,914 in 2012, and 1,002 in 2013.
Excluding online newspapers, the number of other periodicals, covering daily, weekly and monthly publications, grew 53.4 percent to 11,125 in 2013 from 7,250 in 2005. Along with the increase in the number of Internet newspapers, the number of the journalists working there also rose 52.6 percent to 11,141 in 2013 from 7,300 in 2009.
