SK Hynix will invest 400 billion won in added safety measures for its production sites for the next three years.
The memory chip manufacturer said on July 8 that it would spend 407 billion won by 2017 on the safety budget, following an investment of 123 billion won this year. As part of the initiative, the company will double its safety management staff to 80 from the current 40, of which some will be assigned to the safety, health, and environment unit.
The company will also undertake inspections on all of its production sites within this year by inviting external safety experts, followed by support programs for its supplier firms in improving their safety management practice. It will also come up with long-term plans to prevent accidents in high-risk facilities.
The measures are in response to a series of safety accidents in its chip plants. In April this year, for example, a nitrogen gas leak accident at its Icheon site caused three employees of its supplier firm to death.
