Despite the slump of the overall LCD TV shipments, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics increased their market share, strengthening their leading presence in the global LCD TV market.
Their Chinese and Japanese rivals, meanwhile, failed to narrow the gap as they suffered a decline in both shipments and market share.
According to market research firm WitsView on August 11, the global LCD TV shipments reached 48.25 million units in the second quarter of this year, down 6.4 percent from a year ago.
The decline in global LCD TV sales is blamed mainly on the slump of the Chinese economy, the Greek crisis, and the depreciation of emerging market currencies.
By brand, Samsung Electronics solidified the top spot with its share rising to 21.8 percent in the second quarter from 20.4 percent a quarter ago. LG Electronics remained No. 2 with its share rising to 14.7 percent in the second quarter from 14.5 percent in the first quarter.
Following them were TCL with 6.2 percent, down from 7.1 percent a quarter ago, Hisense with 6.0 percent, down from 6.4 percent quarter on quarter, and Sony with 5.4 percent, down from 5.6 percent in the previous quarter.
