KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu

At an event held to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the introduction of telecommunications in Korea, KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu stressed that KT would spearhead the 4th industrial revolution in the nation.

At the event, held on September 23 at the telecom operator's office near Gwanghwamun, the head of South Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier rolled out a blueprint of where KT should be headed in the era of ICT-based convergence.

Korea’s 130-year history of telecommunications is KT’s history. KT has accompanied the nation on its journey to becoming a global ICT powerhouse,” Hwang said.
“Figuratively speaking, we desperately shot arrows at a rock and finally pierced a hole in it. All the members of KT have strived to turn this company around. As a result, KT has recently been ranked 1st amongst global telecommunications operators in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI),” Hwang added.

“The 1st industrial revolution was driven by steam engines, the second by electricity and  the third by computers. The 4th industrial revolution will be led by ICT convergence based on strong networks. ICT convergence technologies will lead to the creation of new businesses,” Hwang emphasized.

KT plans to invest 13 trillion won in building ‘intelligent giga infrastructures’ by 2020. “The future requires something more than simple infrastructures. A tremendous amount of synergy will be gained from adding intelligent features to the infrastructures,” Hwan added.

“We’ve developed the Wiz Stick, the world’s first network-based portable security platform. Thus, our giga infrastructure has traits of intelligence,” he mentioned.

“The Wiz Stick will enable addressing personal security issues within the infrastructure in a smart fashion. We aim to post over 1 trillion won in sales in the Korean security services market, which is projected to reach 10 trillion won by 2020. We will also vigorously make forays into the global security market, valued at approximately 285 trillion won,” he said.

“In the ICT-based convergence services sector, KT will log 5 trillion won in sales by 2010,” he continued.
KT is also set to post 1.6 trillion won in sales by 2020 by expanding the use of smart energy technologies to hotels, plants, sports facilities, etc. Also in the pipeline is a genetic analysis solution, related to pediatric developmental disorders, which is scheduled to be commercialized within this year.
