Samsung Electronics will reportedly sell its patents on camera technologies to Japanese imaging product maker amid the growing speculations that it would pull out of digital camera business.
According to Japanese camera media outlet Nikon Mirrorless citing sources, Samsung Electronics will get out of its camera business and sell its camera technology (NX technology) to Nikon.
It also reported that Nikon may make new mirrorless cameras using Samsung's technologies and launch it at the CES 2016, which takes place in Las Vegas in January of next year.
The media also cited the Samsung's source, saying, "In return for selling its NX technology, Samsung Electronics will supply its image sensor chip to the Japanese company."
Samsung denied the speculation, saying, "Although we already pulled out of the camera business in several countries including the U.K. and also there has been no new product for long, the news is not true."
The company's official added, "Nikon, which is already in the top position in the camera sector, may have no reason to buy Samsung's technology.”
Currently, Samsung Electronics' camera business belongs to its IM division, but it has not shown any meaningful performance during the past five years.
The company is currently making only mirrorless and compact cameras as its DSLR camera is not able to match Canon and Nikon.
