UK-based energy engineering firm Doosan Babcock, a subsidiary of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, has been awarded the contract to deliver the combustion and emissions systems for the biomass conversion of Lynemouth power station near Newcastle in the UK.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction said on May 22 that Doosan Babcock won the deal on the conversion of Lynemouth power station’s three 140MW coal boilers (which has been in use since 1972) from coal to biomass. Biomass for energy refers to plant based material such as wood pellets, manure and food waste, so biomass-based energy generation could reduce air pollution.
In November last year, Doosan Babcock bagged a deal to convert the Yeongdong Plant Unit 1, an aged thermal power plant, into a biomass-fired plant. Doosan Babcock has a proven track record in coal-to-biomass conversion: it has successfully completed a total of 12 coal-to-biomass conversion deals in the UK, France Poland, Canada, etc.
