U.S. magazine Newsweek has released a list of 36 noteworthy people who died this year, including former President Kim Dae-jung.
The magazine said that for nearly four decades, Kim was a dissident antagonist of the harsh, corrupt military leaders who had run South Korea since the 1950s.
The report said Kim survived exile, jailing, beatings, death threats, and kidnapping before winning the presidency of South Korea in 1997 and a Nobel Peace Prize in 2000.
The list included Michael Jackson and Paul Samuelson, the winner of the Nobel Prize in economics.
