FTC USA, December 16, 2016 /Korea IT Times-- For academics and researchers in consumer privacy and data security, think of it as Coachella without the sand and Burning Man with nothing spontaneously combusting

It’s PrivacyCon and the second annual FTC event is set for Thursday, January 12, 2017, in Washington, DC. This isn’t just another panel discussion. PrivacyCon centers around the presentation of papers and posters by more than two dozen leading national (global intergalactic) privacy researchers. Their fields of study are highly technical, but they’re looking into how technology and privacy affect the day-to-day lives of the rest of us.

Chairwoman Ramirez will open with remarks that put a consumer frame around the proceedings. Here’s the line-up for the rest of the day:

Session 1: Internet of Things and Big Data
Session 2: Mobile Privacy
Session 3: Consumer Privacy Expectations
Session 4: Online Behavioral Advertising
Session 5: Information Security

BCP Director Jessica Rich will moderate a wrap-up panel. Check out the agenda for the names and affiliations of the presenters – prepare to be impressed – and links to abstracts of their research.

PrivacyCon begins at 9:00, but registration opens at 7:45 AM. If last year’s 300+ standing-room-only crowd is any indication, it’s wise to arrive early. The event is free and open to the public at the FTC’s Constitution Center conference facility, 400 7th Street, S.W., in Washington, DC, located at Metro’s L’Enfant Plaza station.

We’ll follow up soon with more information, but for now, clear your calendar so you can attend. While you’re making travel arrangements, consider arriving a day early to attend a pre-PrivacyCon R&D Networking Event hosted by the FTC from 2:30 to 4:30 on Wednesday, January 11th, in Constitution Center’s conference area. It’s a platform for government agencies and non-profits that fund or support privacy research to share information about their programs. This post from FTC Chief Technologist Lorrie Cranor explains more about the networking event, including RSVP information.
