Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has built the world’s largest containership surpassing 20,000 TEU. In Geoje shipyard on March 15, SHI held a naming ceremony for the first of four 20,150 TEU containerships, ordered by Japan's MOL (Mitsui O.S.K Lines) in February 2015.

At the ceremony, attended by officials from both SHI and MOL, including SHI CEO Dae-Young Park and MOL CEO Junichiro Ikeda, the world’s largest containership was named 'MOL Triumph.'

MOL Triumph, 400 meters long, 58.8 meters wide, 32.8 meters high, is the world’s largest containership that can transport 20,150 containers on a single voyage and is the first containership that has broken the 20,000 TEU threshold.

An SHI official said, “A container is about 6.1 meters long, so if 20,150 containers are lined up in single file, the total length will be 123 kilometers, equivalent to the distance between Seoul and Sejong City.”
