Merck Calls for Worldwide Ideas through Displaying Futures Award 2017

Displaying Futures Award

Merck, a science and technology company, calls for worldwide ideas through Displaying Futures Award 2017. Headquarter of Merck presented this award last year to identify new applications for Merck materials and to support the further development of these materials. The 2017 award focuses on innovative, flexible hybrid electronic devices enabled by advanced materials. Merck is looking for break-through innovations in 1) wearables for health monitoring, 2) soft robotics and electronic skin, 3) sensors and electronic packaging.

The application period opens on April 3 and closes on May 19, 2017. Anyone can participate in the world. To apply, provide with an executive summary of idea, its technical background as well as the related IP situation, elaborate the business potential of idea and introduction of team including a short- and long-term milestone plan and brief description of the expected use of money in English at at Apply Now! link page.

A jury of experts from Merck will select up to ten teams and ideas on the basis of innovativeness, business potential and social impact. pitch their ideas at the Merck Innovation Center in Darmstadt, Germany. The boot camp and pitch day for all teams are planned for June 2017. Travel costs will be reimbursed for two members of each team (up to 3,000 USD per team). The jury will select up to three winners for the Displaying Futures Award 2017 from these pitches. Beyond the aforementioned support, the three winning teams will be invited in December 2017 for a midway pitch and a second boot camp. At the end of the 12 months, a final event will take place for all selected teams, including a pitch in front of potential investors.

Michael Grund, Managing Director of Merck Korea, emphasized “Our objective is to help our customers to further increase their productivity in panel manufacture. Together with them we will help customers to make the next generation of displays, for example in automotive, medical and education applications, a success and meet another challenge.”

As part of its innovation strategy, Merck specifically focuses on international exchanges with young entrepreneurs who are working on future-oriented business ideas. In addition to formats such as the Displaying Futures Award, Merck has been collaborating intensively with start-ups and universities for years and also conducts, for example, the Accelerator program for start-ups at its sites in Darmstadt, Germany and Nairobi, Kenya. In Korea, “Merck Award” was established for technology papers in 2004 during the IMID (International Meeting on Information Display). The year 2004 marked the 100th anniversary of Merck’s liquid crystal research and the award was designed to recognize outstanding scientific contributions to display technologies. In 2006, the scope of Merck Award enlarged from liquid crystal display technology to all display technology along with young scientists by establishing “Merck Young Scientist Award” and awards every year.
