On March 12, Whirlpool Corp. won over the patent dispute against LG electronics in District Court in Delaware. The patents were regarding "an in-the-door ice system for side-by-side refrigerators," according to the companies. Whirlpool Corp., who manufactures and markets large home appliances, was awarded almost $1.8 million in damages by the jury.
"The company is the largest maker of home appliances in the US, offering clothes washers and dryers, refrigerators, freezers, microwave ovens, ovens, air conditioners, trash compactors and more. Brands include Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Brastemp, Bauknecht, Consul, Amana and Maytag. It manufactures appliances in 12 countries including the US, and sells in over 170 countries. The company had 2008 revenue of about $18.9 billion and has more than 69,600 employees. In September 2008, it was named one of the "Best Places to Launch a Career" by BusinessWeek magazine."[1]
Whirlpool is expected to "seek a permanent injunction against LG when the judgment is finalized later this year" for infringing Whirlpool's U.S. Patent.
