World Information and Communications Summit 2009

Digital Frontier of the 21st Century

Leaders of the Digital World will gather in Seoul on May 25 to share a voice on the theme, "Expanding Digital Economy and Culture" at the World Information and Communications Summit 2010 (WICS 2010). World IT Show, the nation's grand IT-specialized exhibition, will be held synchronously from May 25 to 28.

Digital Collaboration of the World

The leaders of the conquest of the Analogue Empire have succeeded to introduce the new digital era to mankind worldwide. If Spanish conquistadores in the fifteenth through the nineteenth centuries were later followed by Europe's discovery of the New World, the conquerors in the later centuries were led to the Cyber Territory.

While technological and cultural factors played an important role in the victories and defeats of the conquistadores in the fifteenth through the nineteenth centuries, one fatal factor was the disease brought from Europe. Today, history is repeating itself in the "cyber new world", as well. In the process of the expansion of digital economy and culture, the security solutions and strong policies must back up each step to avoid trial and error.

Shaping Together

World Information and Communications Summit (WICS) has come a long way since 2005 when it first gathered ICT ministers and vice ministers under the name, World ICT Summit. Having been once called as IT Ministerial Conference in 2007, WICS has continuously carried on its purpose to create a better information society by collaborating and sharing each country's experience and visions in ICT.

ICT Ministers and Vice Ministers from about 15 countries are scheduled to be present at the WICS 2010.

What to Expect at WICS 2010

Director of Secretariat for WICS 2010 said, "On top of the ministerial meeting, we are arranging the schedules for each participating country to have an in-depth discussion with Korea. Business meetings and corporation visitors are also organized for the invitees." He went on to say, "We expect all the discussions at WICS 2010 and strengthen the relationship between the countries for future collaboration."

This year's ministerial meeting will be kindled by the Chairman Choi See-joong of KCC's plenary speech.  Each participating country then will carry on to present its experiences and ideas to develop ICT. Verbal presentations will be followed by an in-depth discussion to encourage a further collaboration between the countries to succeed a journey as a whole.

Kill Two Birds with One Kill

While WICS is held at Shilla Hotel, World IT Show (WIS) will be jointly held at COEX on May 25. Thus, the attendees of the WICS will be able to see cutting-edge IT devices and services at the exhibition. Since 2008, World IT Show was considered a groundbreaking exhibition due to its unification of already existing events like SEK, IT-Korea, KIECO, and EXPO COMM. Last year, 160,000 people from 52 countries attended WIS. The theme of World IT Show 2010 is "Feel IT, See the Next".

Feel IT and See the Next

Here is the "To Feel and See List"

  • u-City automobile robot, intelligent medical system, latest software and contents
  • Digital appliances, u-Home system, portable devices, and the next generation PC
  • Internet, network, the next generation mobile telecommunication, and the next generation broadcasting system
  • futuristic displays and semi-conductors

The spectacular feast of the trendy and futuristic IT technologies and products at WIS is open for any IT related specialists and early-adopters. About 700 information and communication related companies from home and abroad are registered to showcase their highly advanced technologies and services.

Any local or foreign companies that want to take part in WIS 2010 can apply for participation through the website www.worlditshow.co.kr

A Great Chance for Economic Diplomacy

World Information and Communications Summit is significant in a sense that ICT representatives from the countries worldwide are specifically gathering to spin yarn. Some will open their ICT related strategies to the public while others might analyze the success and failure cases. Then there might be a few that predict a potential threat in the process, while some could focus on the factors that make a country lag behind in digitalization. Whatever is shared at WICS 2010 will be encouraged or concerned in a strong bond. WICS 2010 suggests that it takes the nations as a whole to set a digital culture right, and now through a great partnership and collaborations, the global economy strengthens.

Chairman Choi See-joong of Korea Communications Commission said, "WICS 2010 will provide an opportunity to set ideal policies and strategies for the application of information and communications convergence. Such polices and strategies will play a vital role in the development of new growth engines and contribute to enhance the quality of our lives."
