Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been selected by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning to be the host for the ‘8MW capacity offshore wind power system.’
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and five domestic companies will participate in this project for 48 months. The total cost of the project will be around 49 million dollars, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will oversee the design, manufacturing, and demonstration of the 8MW model.
The wind power system being developed is a product capable of generating 8MW from the wind with an average speed of 10m/s, and is a high efficiency product with a utilization rate of 30 percent or more even at an average wind speed of 6.5m/s. It also has durability to withstand extreme environments with winds of 70m/s, making it suitable for environments in Korea where typhoons and low wind speed are frequent. Furthermore, large-capacity models can reduce installation and power related costs, thereby reducing the cost of electricity (CoE).
“In addition to the 3MW and 5.5 MW wind turbine lineup, we will be able to expand our line of wind power up to the 8MW model. Once the development is completed, we will aggressively pursue the overseas wind power market,” said an official at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.
The capacity of domestic wind power plants is expected to increase to 17.7 GW by 2030 according to the 8th power supply and demand plan, of which about 14 GW will be filled with offshore wind power.
According to a report released by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) in 2017, the cumulative amount of global wind power is expected to increase to 658 GWs in 2020 and 1,454 GWs in 2030.
