In order to establish the world’s first 5G commercial network, LG Uplus is going to introduce next-generation transmission equipment from South Korean equipment manufacturers: Dasan Network Solutions and Ubiquoss.

It is a high performance ‘100G switch’ that transmits data traffic between 5G wireless base station and wired network (mobile backhaul). The device can maintain the same size and power consumption while processing 46 times as much data as the existing switch used in LTE network 10 times faster.

In particular, ‘Segment Routing’ (SR), a major technology for next-generation network, is applied to traffic control, simplify network operation, easily interlink with other manufacturers, and respond to next-generation technologies such as SDN.

LG Uplus said that it was the first domestic carrier to introduce segmentation routing technology in mobile backhaul, and explained it was hard to find similar carriers overseas.

In addition, the equipment is also equipped with Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Software Defined Network (SDN) technology to implement ‘Network Slicing’ that divides traffic of various characteristics into multiple virtual networks, ensuring high quality data service; furthermore, not only service quality can be differentiated, but also traffic processing efficiency can be greatly increased.

LG Uplus has started to develop next generation transmission equipment with domestic equipment manufacturers since last year. In the second half of this year, Daesan Network Solutions and Ubiquoss will be deployed to mobile networks in anticipation of full-scale 5G network construction.

“Except for the communication between the smartphone and the wireless base station, 5G mobile communication is required to invest in stable fixed-line infrastructure because data is transmitted through the wired network. With the introduction of next-generation domestic transmission equipment, we will build up more sophisticated wired networks and establish best practices for shared growth,” said Lee Sang-hun, LG Uplus Network Development Manager.

“LG Uplus’ introduction of domestic equipment will be an opportunity to supply domestic equipment to overseas carriers preparing for 5G. As Korea launches the world’s first 5G service, we expect to have many business opportunities in overseas markets based on our advanced technology,” said Won Duk-yeon, CEO of Daesan Network Solutions.
