Even though the government pushes the Green industry, most resources, materials and machinery for renewable energy uses depended on imports. This situation does not help to form a domestic industrial base.
Kwon Hyuk-soo, a senior researcher of the Korea Energy Economic Institute (KEEI) pointed out: “The domestic reusable energy industry has developed slowly because it has depended much on imports. This problem causes a failure in creating value and shows poor technical development. It is like a vicious circle.”
Actually, the wind power industry imported 99.6 percent of machinery and materials, and the solar energy industry imported 75 percent last July.
Some are concerned that our nation could be more dependent on importing renewable energy materials than it is on fossil fuels, because local technologies and products related to the renewable energy industry are seriously insufficient. This situation would destroy any domestic market development.
Kwon said: “Conglomerates don’t want to start the recycling business because of investment risk and enormous initial investment, so, our nation has no outstanding company internationally. Thus, we need to establish an efficient promotion system and prepare a base to support it.”
