A private-government joint investigation team has found that the cause of the BMW fire is not the EGR bypass problem that the management has been insisting on but the EGR valve.
The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) announced on Nov. 7 that the cause of the BMW accidents is related to the EGR valve.
The Investigation team claims that the opening EGR bypass valve, which has been claimed by BMW as the condition of fire occurrence, has nothing to do with the cause of the fire.
Previously, the government formed the "BMW fire investigation private-government joint team" to probe causes of fire accidents at home and abroad and conduct vehicle and engine tests. Last month, the company carried out additional recall of BMW 118d, which was originally excluded from the list of objects for recall.
The investigation team said, "The cause of the fire will be identified as soon as December this year to resolve public anxiety and secure consumers' safety. If the results require additional measures, we will recommend relevant steps such as the change and expansion of the recall methods to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport."
