UAE Barakah nuclear plant

Energy Intelligence reported on December 16 that a concrete hole was found at the Barakah nuclear plant, which is under construction by Korea at the UAE.

The UAE Nuclear Corporation (ENEC) officially announced that it has discovered the concrete hole in BNPP 3 through quality assurance processes and supervision of construction.

The Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) said on December 17 that the hole was discovered by KEPCO and that ENEC, the owner of the Barakah nuclear plant, confirmed it.

KEPCO explained that ENEC informed the UAE Nuclear Regulatory Agency (FANR) of this fact and that an investigation was conducted.

The research process involved a consortium of KEPCO, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Samsung C&T, and independent concrete experts.

KEPCO explained that the maintenance work for the third nuclear plant will be completed by the end of 2018.

KEPCO also explained that the maintenance work on the second and third plants will not affect the entire schedule.
