Korea wants to be in the Top 3 in the LED industry by 2012. Cho Young shin from MKE (the Ministry of Knowledge Economy) Introduced the national strategies for developing the LED industry in Korea.
The main three plans are creating a leading demand-market, enhancing core competencies worldwide and building a stable growth structure.
In order to lead the demand market, the Korean government will expand the use of LED in public institutions. They will change 30 percent of the whole lighting system to LED lighting by 2012 and also incandescent lamps will be changed to LED within the year. By installing in public institutions, they plan to grow the certification of LED products.
As the world jumps into the LED industry more and more, the Korean government will conduct intensive investment on target technologies, so that they can preempt the new core source technologies such as epi/chip/packaging, material modules and applications.
Also, they will initiate a global standard to strengthen the power of Korean products. For that, joint R&D and cooperation with other nations over the world are needed.
Most of all, building a stable growth structure is mandatory to improve the new growth power. In favor of that, the Korean government will focus on region-specific cluster composition and expand investment. And the government will facilitate market entry by improving the system.
There is no doubt that LED industry development will bring lots of outcomes industrially, economically and environmentally. The MKE expects that it will create jobs and increase the GDP and industrial output. Not only this, if 30 percent of lighting system was changed to LED, about KRW 1.6 trillion could be saved (16.021 GWh saving) in a year. Also 6.8 million tonnes of CO2 will be reduced in emissions.
