A total of 44,967 cars of 39 car models will be recalled, including Hyundai Motor's Sonata, Kia Motors' K5 and Mercedes-Benz Korea's GLK220 and Toyota Motor Korea's Lexus.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on April 15 that it will take corrective action (recall) after manufacturing defects were found in 44,967 cars of 39 models manufactured, imported and sold by Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, Mercedes-Benz Korea, and Toyota Korea.
It has been confirmed that 25,113 cars of three models, including the Sonata manufactured and sold by Hyundai Motor, and 3,758 cars of the K5 manufactured and sold by Kia Motors, may cause an accident due to intermittent lack of braking control during remote parking due to software errors in remote smart parking aid devices.
Nonconformities in auto safety standards will be recalled first, but fines will be imposed in consideration of future correction rates.
Related to the defect correction, the manufacturer is required to notify the owner of the car of the correction method by mail and mobile phone text.
If the owner of the motor vehicle has repaired the defect at his own expense before rectifying the defect, he may apply to the manufacturer for compensation for the repair costs.
It has been confirmed that 8,163 cars of 12 models, including the "GLK 220" imported and sold by Mercedes-Benz Korea, will likely cause injuries to drivers due to excessive explosion pressure from the inflator when using airbags.
From April 16, the vehicle can be repaired free of charge at Mercedes-Benz Korea's official service center.
4,686 cars of 23 models, including the Lexus "RX450h" imported and sold by Toyota Motor Korea, were confirmed to be unable to operate the fuel pump due to defects in some parts in the fuel pump, causing the engine to turn off while driving.
From April 29, the vehicle will be eligible for replacement with improved parts free of charge at Toyota Motor Korea's official service center.
