First Ocean image taken by COMS
KCC announced that Korea's first geostationary satellite, COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite, 'Cheonllian' in Korean) took images of marine and weather for the first time on July 12 and 13 after its successful launching to geostationary orbit on June 27.

Korean Aerospace Research Institute devises day-to-day plans for COMS and conducts official regulations with the National Meteorological Satellite Center, Korea Ocean Research, Korea Ocean Satellite Center and Communication Satellite Center where they manage three kinds of utilization of COMS, for 6 months.

The satellite will operate test-runs with Satellite Ground Control System, developed in Korea, till the end of this year and perform its duties including ocean weather observations and public communications services for 7 years. KCC has a high hope that it will provide much more reliable weather and oceanic information as well as convey added communications satellite capability for Korea.

COMS was jointly developed and produced by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and  the Astrium Satellite Corporation of France. A total of KRW 354.9 billion has been invested in development for the past 7 years.
