LG Display's OLED is the first TV panel to open an era of 'Flicker Free'. The purpose of the program is to present "Flicker Free" as a new standard for TV selection as the importance of eye-friendly displays is becoming greater as TV viewing time and online classes for teenagers increased owing to the COVID-19.

LG Display made an announcement on July 5 that it has acquired 'Flicker Free' certification and verification marks from Germany's international certification agency 'TUV Rheinland' and the global safety science company 'UL', respectively, for all models of OLED TV panels ranging from 48 inches to 88 inches.

The flicker phenomenon is that the light or screen flashes very quickly and is divided into “visible flicker" and “invisible flicker." Even "invisible flicker" is known to cause headaches, eye fatigue, and poor eyesight when exposed for a long time.

As a result of the measurement of "TUV Rheinland," LG Display's OLED TV panel was certified as "Flicker Free" because of its structure that produces light on its own, and its invisible flicker was measured at 0%.

In addition, the UL measurement results also showed that the flicker phenomenon was 1.3 percent, far below the benchmark 9.6 percent, and obtained the "Flicker Free" verification mark.

On the other hand, LCD TVs have invisible flicker phenomena because backlight LED light sources flash and emit light at very short intervals.

Earlier, the OLED TV panel lowered the industry's lowest emission of blue light, which causes eye fatigue or sleep disorders, to get the 'low blue light' certification from 'TUV Rheinland.'

It has also been recognized as a reasonable display for eye health by acquiring 'Blue light's highest safety rating' at a level 50 percent lower than the harmless standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from “UL.”

Oh Chang-ho, vice president of LG Display's TV business, said, "As TV viewing time increases in the COVID-19 era, the importance of TVs that are comfortable with eyes is increasing. Through this certification, consumers will be able to choose OLED TVs with confidence."
