"Don't stop building knowledge while studying abroad, but grow into an intelligent person who gives it back to society. The more you use, the more it doesn't disappear. It is intelligence spreading out into society."
SK Chairman Chey Tae-won made the remarks at an event at the Korea Higher Education Foundation in Seoul on July 7 to encourage scholarship students to study abroad with support from the foundation, urging them to grow into talent sharing their achievements with society.
Chairman Chey, who is the chairman of the Korea Higher Education Foundation, said, "The reason for selecting scholarship students is to 'develop intelligence for society,'" adding, "I hope you will look far into the future and grow into an intellectual who contributes to making our society happier."
He also said, "This year is the first time we're all experiencing a pandemic. Please work hard to solve the challenges we face in all areas, including politics, economy, and society, and to develop our capabilities to lead change."
The event was attended by 33 scholarship students and other foundation officials, including Park In-kook, secretary general of the Korea Higher Education Foundation. This year's selected scholarship students will take doctoral degrees at prestigious universities abroad, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Chicago and MIT.
Chairman Chey has been attending events such as annual talks with new SK employees and a luncheon to encourage scholarship students.
Meanwhile, the Korea Higher Education Foundation was established in 1974 by the late Chey Jong-hyun, Chey's father, with the belief that he "plants trees looking forward to 10 years, and raises talent looking forward to 100 years." Over the past 45 years, the foundation has supported 3,500 scholarship students in Korea and produced 780 Ph. Ds from prestigious universities abroad.
