Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) plans to form a "Team Korea" organization with Korea Electric Power Engineering, KEPCO Fuel, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Daewoo Engineering & Construction to speed up its bid for the Czech nuclear power plant project.
The Czech government is carrying out the project without a hitch to order construction of new nuclear power plants despite difficulties due to the COVID-19.
Accordingly, KHNP plans to complete a task force (TF) through preparation within this month and prepare bids and respond to related questions.
It is also seeking to get the European business requirements (EUR) certification to objectively prove the technical safety of APR1000, a type that is scheduled to bid. The EUR is a standard requirement for design of new nuclear power plants common to European operators, and KHNP received EUR certification in November 2017 for the EU-APR model, the APR1400's European-exportable nuclear power plant.
The Czech Republic is pushing ahead with the construction of one 1,000MW to 1,200MW nuclear power plant in the Dukovany region. The cost of the project is expected to reach 8 trillion won, and is now expected to be the country with the highest export potential.
KHNP has sponsored a local ice hockey team in the Czech Republic to win a successful business order, and has built trust from the base, including volunteer work for the new nuclear power plant area and medical supplies for the prevention of COVID-19.
KHNP is also knocking on the Romanian nuclear power plant operation maintenance market and Egypt's Eldabaa nuclear power plant construction project.
In Romania, reactors 1 and 2 are under commercial operation, and large-scale facility improvement projects are underway sequentially to continue operation of the first plant. It is expected that the operational maintenance market will open at these nuclear power plants, and in addition, the Romanian nuclear power market is expected to expand in the future.
Chung Jae-hoon, president of KHNP, said, "We are striving to operate safe nuclear power plants in Korea, and we are creating favorable global conditions to win nuclear power plant orders from overseas. We will make all-out efforts to become a comprehensive energy company armed with the world's best nuclear power generation technology."
