Korea East-West Power Co. (EWP) announced on Aug. 21 that it has developed body temperature, mask, and safety helmet sensors along with small and medium-sized company Youngkook Electronics Co.

The research and development project was pushed to create a product that detects whether or not to wear safety helmets needed at industrial sites amid the spread of a number of foreign products that detect body temperature and masks.

Sensors use facial recognition technology to detect temperature, mask, and safety helmet of visitors within a second. If the body temperature is above 37.5 degrees (°C) or if the mask or safety helmet is not worn, the alarm sounds to restrict access.

When a person is located in front of the detector, it automatically informs the time of the examination, the identity of the registrant, and the results of the examination immediately.

At the same time, measurement data can be stored and printed in the form of a report, allowing visitors to manage their history without having to place a separate handbook or a measurement personnel.

"After producing a prototype applied with facial recognition technology at Youngkook Electronics in April, we improved the recognition rate of safety helmets to more than 90 percent through two on-site demonstrations at the Technology Development Institute, an organization dedicated to the fourth industrial revolution," said an EWP official. "We succeeded in commercializing them by strengthening warning functions and improving the function of report-type data output."

"Through the development of sensors, we have contributed to the development of industrial safety and small and medium-sized enterprises' products," he added. "We will provide the developed products to schools and welfare facilities near power plants free of charge to help prevent infectious diseases in the local community."
