Hyundai Heavy Industries Group is leading the eco-friendly ship sector by building the world's first LNG-powered super-large container ship.
Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) announced that it will complete the test-run of the 14,800-TEU container ship ordered by Singapore's EPS with 130 ship owners and shipping officials on board, and deliver it on Sept. 15.
The 366-meter-long, 51-meter-wide and 29.9-meter-deep vessel is the world's first large container ship to use LNG as fuel.
In particular, the vessel is equipped with a large 12,000 cubic meter (m3) LNG fuel tank, which allows it to travel back and forth between Asian and European routes on a single charge.
The LNG fuel tank is equipped with 9% nickel steel that can maintain excellent strength and impact toughness even in a cryogenic (-163°C) environment.
In addition, it has optimized the layout and design of LNG fuel tanks, FGSS and dual fuel engines needed for LNG propulsion ship, enhancing safety and container loading efficiency.
HSHI won orders from EPS in April 2018 to build a total of six same-type vessels, all of which are scheduled to be delivered by the third quarter of 2022.
"Just as electric cars are in the spotlight in the automotive industry, eco-friendly ships such as LNG propulsion ships are also receiving great attention in the shipbuilding industry," a Hyundai Heavy Industries Group official said. "We will secure customer trust with accumulated technology and quality and continue to lead the LNG fuel ship sector."
