SEOUL, KOREA – Woori Bank will spin off its credit card unit and create a separate company. The Financial Services Commission held on January 16 a regular meeting to approve the application by the bank to establish Woori Card. Woori Bank will soon hold a general shareholders meeting to get approval for the matter.
The newly created organization will have capital of 846.3 billion won, 100 percent of which will be held by Woori Financial Group. The assets of Woori Bank's credit card division are estimated at 3,904.4 billion won as of September 2012. Credit card sales during the nine-month period between January and September last year were 26,881.5 billion won, accounting for 6.4 percent of the whole market.
Once Woori Card is established as planned, Korea's credit card industry will have eight players including Shinhan, KB Kookmin, Samsung, Hyundai, Lotte, Hana-SK, and BC Card.
금융위, 우리은행 카드 분사 의결
우리은행이 카드 부문을 떼어내 별도 법인인 우리카드를 만든다.

우리은행은 조만간 주주총회를 열어 신용카드 부문 분할을 승인하고 금융위에 신용카드 부문 분할 본인가와 신용카드업 영위 본허가를 신청할 계획이다. 우리은행은 3월 초까지 인력 충원 및 전산시스템 정비 등을 거쳐 분사 작업을 마무리할 방침이다. 신설되는 우리카드의 자본금은 8463억원이며 우리금융지주가 지분 100%를 갖는다. 조직은 4본부 11부 2실 1센터 34팀으로 이뤄진다.
우리은행 카드사업 부문 자산은 지난해 9월 기준 3조9044억원으로 은행 총 자산 238조7166억원의 1.6% 수준이다. 지난해 1~9월 중 신용카드 이용실적은 26조8815억원, 시장점유율은 6.4%다.
우리카드가 출범하면 국내 전업계 카드사는 신한카드, KB국민카드, 삼성카드, 현대카드, 롯데카드, 하나SK카드, 비씨카드를 포함해 8개로 늘어난다.
