Seoul, Korea - KT and Samsung Electronics announced on the 20th that they will introduce their jointly developed LTE multicasting technology (eMBMS) at this year’s Mobile World Congress.
eMBMS, a short word for ‘evolved Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service’, is a technology used to efficiently deliver HD video to the subscribers over the LTE network.
Assuming there are 100 users who want to use a content within a base station, the existing service had to deliver the same data 100 times. With eMBMS, multiple subscribers can receive the content in a similar way the content is delivered by radio or Digital Media Broadcasts.
In this joint project, KT provided mobile IPTV solution and Samsung took charge of developing the network infrastructure equipment. Qualcomm also made contribution in the areas of middleware and chipsets.
By making its network more efficient with the simultaneous delivery of data to multiple subscribers, KT plans to provide the service by which the users will not have to spend their data packets. KT is also planning to integrate eMBMS to its IP multicast technology to provide the all-IP multicast service.
KT-삼성전자, LTE 멀티캐스트 공동 개발
KT와 삼성전자가 국내 최초로 롱텀에벌루션(LTE) 멀티캐스트(eMBMS) 기술을 개발해 오는 25일부터 열리는 모바일월드콩그레스(MWC) 2013에서 전시한다고 20일 밝혔다.
LTE 멀티캐스트(evolved Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service)는 LTE 네트워크로 수많은 가입자에게 HD 영상 콘텐츠를 효율적으로 전송하기 위한 기술이다. 이전에는 한 기지국 내 100명의 콘텐츠 이용자가 있을 때 동일한 데이터를 100번 전송해야 했지만, eMBMS 기술을 적용하면 라디오나 DMB처럼 한 번의 전송으로 다수 가입자가 서비스를 이용할 수 있다.
KT가 모바일 IPTV 솔루션, 삼성전자가 네트워크 인프라 장비를 담당해 개발했다. 퀄컴도 미들웨어·칩세트 분야에서 협력했다.
KT는 다수 사용자에게 동시 전송을 통한 네트워크 효율화로 개별 사용자의 데이터 소모 없이 서비스를 제공할 계획이다. 또 유선 분야에서 운영 중인 IP 멀티캐스트 기술과 접목해 `올(All) IP` 멀티캐스트 서비스를 추진한다는 목표다.
곽봉군 KT FI본부장은 “LTE 시대에 고객들이 가장 원하는 것은 모바일에서 자유롭게 HD 영상 콘텐츠를 이용하는 것”이라며 “LTE 멀티캐스트 기술을 통해 KT 고객들은 데이터 요금 부담 없이 고품질의 차별화된 LTE 서비스를 즐길 수 있게 됐다”고 말했다.
홍익표 삼성전자 네트워크사업부 글로벌 마케팅그룹장은 “eMBMS는 LTE 망을 통해 방송 서비스를 제공할 때 네트워크의 부담을 줄여줌과 동시에 소비자들에게는 고품질 영상을 제공하는 가장 효율적이면서도 혁신적인 서비스”라고 설명했다.
